Project Overview

The Nam Kap Hydropower Project is a 12 MW run-of-the-river power plant located in Xaysomboun province, 35 km northeast of Vang Vieng. The plant had been experiencing persistent operational issues, affecting power generation and system reliability.


The Challenge

Unstable Load Performance

Plant operators reported that both Unit 1 and Unit 2 experienced simultaneous load drops when operating at 6 MW, significantly impacting power production. After a thorough investigation, our team identified three major causes:


1.1 Faulty Pressure Transmitter

  • Inconsistent pressure readings caused system instability.


1.2 Insufficient Water Flow

  • Leaks in the system reduced water supply, leading to load fluctuations.


1.3 Profibus Data Transmission Failures

  • Communication issues between key components caused system instability.

The Solution

Our team implemented a structured troubleshooting and repair plan to address each issue systematically.


1.1 Pressure Transmitter Calibration & Replacement

  • Rechecked the pressure transmitter for accuracy.
  • Performed calibration and replaced faulty components.


1.2 Water Flow Restoration

  • Identified leak points and performed necessary repairs.
  • Restored proper water flow to stabilize load performance.


1.3 Profibus Communication System Enhancement

  • Installed a Profibus Drift Switch to improve data transmission.
  • Replaced Profibus cables to correct low voltage issues (previously 2.1V).
  • Adjusted baud rate to enhance communication efficiency.


1.4 PLC System & Hardware Upgrades

  • Installed a Siemens CPU315-2 PN/DP 315-2EH14-0AB0 for enhanced processing power.
  • Replaced critical input-output cards to improve system reliability:
  • Analog Input Card 331-7KF02-0AB0
  • Digital Input Card 321-1BL00-0AA0


1.5 Software & Programming Enhancements

  • Downloaded and updated hardware configuration programs.
  • Modified graphics for improved power meter display and branding.
  • Checked interlock and system readiness before startup.
  • Simulated and tested I/O channels to verify all inputs and outputs.

The Result: A Fully Optimized & Stable Hydropower System

  • The system was successfully restored to full operational capacity.

Long-standing load drop issues were completely eliminated.

  • The system is now stable and ready for long-term operation.
